A Taiwanese chef is catching flack from animal rights activists for serving a way-too-fresh fish, partially deep fried yet still twitching. Amazing. Gross? Incredibly. Inhumane? Maybe. Outright wrong? I don't think so.
but wait... there's more!
On the same page, an adorable slide show of ___ obese cats. Why are the animal rights activists not screaming over this one? Wasn't there a story of British authorities removing an obese child from his mother's care? Why are fat cats immune to the wrath of activists and fish get it?
But speaking of fat cats...
Follow along with me for a moment.
We recently adopted a large cat. After we got him home, we skimmed over his veterinary records, showing that he had been originally rescued in July 2005. That can't be right. Although a year and a half in a cage might explain his 18 lb register on our bathroom scale. Long story short, this cat fell ill, requiring care beyond our means. So we returned him to the rescue agency, per our 'contract' with them (which also required such things as promising to keep the cat indoors - I am convinced this furthered his weight problem and even caused this habit of ingesting large quantities of foreign objects.)
I know I said short, so let me get to my point.
When we arrived to turn him back in, the woman handling the papers, etc all but accused me of neglect, for the simple act of choosing (as the rightful owner of this cat) not to over-extend our finances for this animal. And of course, they take no responsibility for their part in making him as fat as he is/was. By saving every animal they can, don't they contribute to pet overpopulation? How is that humane? Every pet they save has to endure part (in this case up to a year and a half!!!) of its life confined to a cage, to only then be confined - unnaturally - for the rest of its life to the indoors. And this is 'saving it's life.' Let's get some perspective here, people!

While I know others are struggling through their troubles this Christmas, we are having our own issues with the loss of our Moses. We aren't moping around the house crying all day and night, but there is a heaviness about the place. I went into the kids' room last night to help Simon settle himself. I told him to face the wall so he could see Moses (Tim had taped a picture of the cat up above each bed). I was really looking for something for Simon to focus on so he would stop talking to Chas and Mia and go to sleep. He burst into tears, and said he prayed to God that he wished Moses was still alive. And he didn't even get to see Moses; he really wanted to see him Friday night after we discovered him. Simon is such a sweet soul. I remember once he stood in the kitchen and cried because Moses was in the backyard crying to come inside and I didn't immediately go open the door for him. 'Mosey's my best friend and you're leaving him out there!' I think the deadbolt was on, the boys couldn't open the door on their own. Simon used to get down on the floor and show Moses pictures he had drawn, and he was always first to volunteer to fill Moses' food bowl. When Simon asked to see Moses, I was going to let him, but Tim didn't think it would be a good idea. I thought it wouldn't really hurt but might offer Simon some closure. It's done now, Moses is in the ground with dahlia bulbs over top awaiting the warm Spring. We set a small amount of the same bulbs to the side, we'll put them in the ground at the new place. We have talked with the kids about getting another cat when we get to the new place in Virginia. We'll have to see.
In the meantime, Nigel is doing his best to fill the space. His coat is getting so long that it is falling to the sides naturally leaving a part on his back. At the part, you can see the difference between the undercoat, soft and light, and the overcoat now, coarse and peppery. The fur on his head, though, still makes an Einstein-ian explosion, which is quite adorable. We also weighed him at the PetSmart and it appears he has gained some weight since coming home in September. He likes to bury his treats lately. He rarely eats them, but instead, wanders the house whimpering and searching. So far he has buried treats in the couch cushions and in baskets of toys. And if he cons me into letting him outside (sometimes you can't see beneath the beard if he has something in his mouth,) he makes a mess of his beard as he noses the dirt over to fill the hole. Nigel is a happy and mostly balanced member of our family.

So long, old friend...
We have returned victorious! We found an amazing new place to live in Alexandria, Va. See Tim's blog for pictures.
Also, we were surprised to find that while we were away our dear old cat Moses passed away. We had taken him to the vet this summer after he lost a lot of weight. They were unable to determine what was wrong. He bounced back eventually, but we noticed him taking a turn down the same road again these last few weeks - sleeping a lot (even for a cat) and losing weight again. I had seen this pattern earlier this year when my sister's cat was ill and then passed away.
We are a bit overwhelmed with this news. The boys, especially, as they really missed him while they were at Nana's for four days. Mia wasn't affected in the same way though. She asked if he was still dead, and then said that she told God that Moses was dead. Poor Simon keeps asking to see Moses. We explained that we want him to remember Moses healthy and happy. Chas noticed that we forgot to give Moses his Christmas present. It lay on the hearth unopened. We decided to include it in the box with Moses when we bury him later this morning. Moses had been our friend for nearly nine years. He was our first son, in a way. We'll make a scrap book together this week with photos and stories. Depending how the week goes with the move coming up, I'll try to post some of the stories.
Our Christmas was wonderful, filled with family as it should be. Please forgive my hyperlinking, others have posted lovely blogs, much more intelligible than I can manage at this point. Josee has Christmas pictures up on her blog, at the Meehan Family Photoblog. See also, the Family Christmas Jam (Tim and PopPop's movie on Josee's blog.) I'll try to post some pictures of our Christmas morning at home soon.
